Pom Klementieff is a French actress who was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. She was born on 3rd May 1986 to a French-Russian father and a Korean mother. As she grew up, their family moved a lot due to her father’s work. They lived in Japan, Ivory Coast, and ended up settling in France. She has said that the traveling instances gave her a “gypsy soul”. Pom has appeared in Loup (2009), Sleepless Night of 2011, and Hacker’s Game in 2015. She also plays as Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
Pom Klementieff’s dad died when she was only five. He succumbed to cancer leaving her under the care of her ailing mother. The mother had schizophrenia rendering her weak to take care of children. After her father’s death, her mother was unable to raise her too. She was raised by her paternal uncle then who later passed on. To appease her aunt, she attended law school briefly. She would also land jobs as a waitress and saleswoman. It is at the age of 19 that she started acting in Cours Florent drama school. She won a theater competition a few months later earning herself free acting classes with the school’s top teachers for two years.
Pom Klementieff did her first professional role in the Après lui (2007), the French independent film. She portrayed the step-daughter of the protagonist, a role that was played by Catherine Deneuve. Her scenes were shot for three days. She landed her first leading role in the film Loup, in 2009. This was a French film about a reindeer herders’ tribe in the Siberian mountains. She also featured in the television series Pigalle, la nuit as Sandra. The show ran for eight episodes, and Klementieff appeared in all. Toher films she has featured in include Delicacy, Silhouettes, Porn in the Hood, El Turrrf, Paris à tout prix, À l’ombre du palmier, Bordeline, and Radiostars.
Klementieff appeared in Spike Lee’s film Oldboy in 2013 making her debut in Hollywood. She acted as Haeng-Bok, a body for the antagonist which was played by Sharlto Copley. After landing the role, she took martial arts and boxing lessons and even contributed some clothes to the character she was to play. She is credited for coming up with the name Haeng-Bok after the producer tasked her with the responsibility of finding a name that suited that role.
After filming Oldboy, Klementieff moved to Los Angeles where she pursued more Hollywood auditions. She also went on with training for Taekwondo and has earned herself a purple belt (2014). As she continued auditioning, she got her next role in the film Hacker’s Game in 2015. She also applied her boxing skills in the film. She, however, had to do her make-up and wardrobe due to the movie’s low budget.
Her role as Mantis came up in 2017. This was after joining Marvel Studios, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her first role as Mantis was in the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017. Klementieff will also appear in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, reprising her role as Mantis. In the Marvel Studios 2019 untitled release, referred only to as Avengers, she will still be reprising her role as Mantis. It has also been stated that she will be in the cast for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movie expected to be released in 2020.
