Is 2019 Going To Be Another Crazy Rich Year For Awkwafina?

Entertainment

Nora Lum, or also known as Awkwafina, is an American rapper turned actress-comedian. She was one of the hosts of MTV’s talk show – “Girl Code.” In 2013, Awkwafina made her acting debut in a short film called Shadowmen. HBO’s “Animals,” a short-lived animated comedy series used Awkwafina’s voice in one of its episodes. Apart from that she also became the first Asian woman to host the show “Saturday Night Live” in 18 years.

2018 is no doubt a very good year for this Crazy Rich Asians star. Awkwafina got two major blockbusters this year for the movies – “Ocean’s 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” Moreover, she got the chance to work alongside with Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Stevie Wonder on John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s NBC holiday special, “A Legendary Christmas with John and Chrissy,” where she was cast as the couple’s friend who can’t cook.

Now, this rising star seems to be visible everywhere, getting ready for more big projects for the upcoming year. To start with, Awkwafina will have a self-titled half-hour comedy series that will feature about her life on Comedy Central. According to reports from IndieWire*, the said show was already approved and has completed the rest of its cast.

The self-titled show is a great opportunity for Awkwafina to showcase her talent as a writer because

she is also the executive producer and one of the writers of the show. It was Margaret Cho’s comedy specials that influenced Awkwafina’s love for comedy.

The story will revolve on the life of Awkwafina in New York where she grew up. The character is in her mid-20’s who is trying very hard for a larger than life existence. Her new show will also feature B.D. Wong as her father, Lori Tan Chinn as her grandmother, and Bowen Yang is set to play as her cousin.

Besides having her own Comedy Central series, Awkwafina has two films that will have a world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 – “Farewell” and “Paradise Hills.” Awkwafina will play a young woman who goes to China to visit her dying grandmother in the movie “The Farewell,” while “Paradise Hills” is a fantasy drama film about a mysterious boarding school for willful girls.

Furthermore, the huge success of the Crazy Rich Asians in 2018 has shown that a sequel is inevitable. The Warner Bros studio is apparently already in the early stages of developing part two – “China Rich Girlfriend.” The Crazy Rich Asians cast will reunite once more to start filming the sequel. With all of these projects in hand, it is likely that Awkwafina is going to have another crazy rich year for 2019.
