Calaway was born on March 24, 1965 in Houston, Texas. He majored in Sport Management in Texas Wesleyan University and was part of the basketball team as a center. He dropped out of the university to focus on having a career in sports. He started with World Class Championship Wrestling in 1984 using the ring name, Texas Red In 1988, he joined the Continental Wrestling Association which later became part of the United States Wrestling Association. A year later he joined World Championship Wrestling with the ring name, Mean Mark. He eventually signed with the then World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1990. As The Undertaker, Calaway used scare tactics in a horror-themed gimmick. He unseated Hulk Hogan as WWF Champion in 1991. Some of his achievements over the years include having 21 straight wins at WWE’s WrestleMania. He also won the WWF/WWW Championship four times, the WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship three times, USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship once and the 2007 Royal Rumble.
Throughout his career, Calaway feuded with other popular wrestling personalities including Yokozuna, Mankind, Bray Wyatt, and Roman Reigns. He celebrated many victories in the ring but also lost in several matches that resulted in injuries where he was out of the action for months at a time. In a 2013 Digital Spy poll, Calaway was voted as the Greatest WWE wrestler. Calaway is a big boxing and mix martial arts fan. He earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2011. Calaway and his business partner, Scott Everhart, invested in real estate. They have a $2.7 million building in Loveland, Colorado called the Calahart. Calaway and his ex-wife Sara also started The Zeus Compton Calaway Save the Animals fund at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
