He was born on the 14th of October in Bronx area of New York City but Stephen A Smith was raised in the Hollis section of Queens. He was the second youngest of six children born to parents who were originally from Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Stephen A Smith ancestry were all black except his maternal grandmother who was white.
Stephen A Smith graduated from Thomas Edison High School in Queens and also attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for one year. Stephen A Smith then received a basketball scholarship to attend Winston-Salem University, a historically black university.
When Stephen A Smith was in college he played basketball under coach Clarence Gaines. He wrote about the coach for the university newspaper even while he’s still on the team. His print media career started with the Winston-Salem Journal.
Stephen A Smith also started writing for the Greensboro News and the New York Daily News. Later on, in 1994, Stephen A Smith had a position as a writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Stephen A Smith then began reporting on the Philadelphia 76ers as an NBA columnist and ultimately as a general sports columnist. Stephen A Smith hosted a weekday noon radio show on WEPN which was later moved to 2-4pm time slot to be simultaneously broadcast nationally on ESPN Radio. Stephen A Smith also became an on-air contributor to Fox Sports Radio in 2009 which eventually led him hosting a morning show Fox Sports Radio in 2010.
He ended the morning radio show early in 2011 because he became a resident FSR NBA insider. In the same year, he returned to ESPN as a columnist and a weekly local radio host.
