Rick played baseball for Marshall University and was drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates in 1986. He debuted in Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1988 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Reed got to play for a limited time each year from 1988 to 1991. After that, Rick Reed spent several years playing in the minor leagues.
In 1995, Reed returned to the major league as a replacement player for the Cincinnati Reds, but did not pitch well during that season.
