In high school, Oliver Luck was an outstanding quarterback for Saint Ignatius High School, Cleveland football team. After completing high school, luck enrolled in West Virginia University where he played quarterback from 1978-81. In 1980 Luck and his college football first team earned the Academic All-American honors.
In the 1982 American National Football League (NFL) draft, Luck ranked number 44 in the second round. He was signed up by the Houston Oilers. During the 1982-83 seasons, he was quarterback with fellow teammate Archie Manning. From 1984 till 1986 he was back-up for Houston Oilers teammate, Canadian Football League star Warren Moon.
