    Michael showed an early interest in playing football/soccer during his youth and started attending the Bradenton Soccer Academy in Florida. After finishing high school, Michael attended Wake Forest University where he played college soccer at for the Demon Deacons from 2002 to 2004. There he played all sixty-two games and scored one goal and registered two assists.

    Michael Parkhurst grew up in Rhode Island and played soccer for CLCF Soccer and Bayside United and in 1996, attended the inaugural game of the New England Revolution.

    In January 2005, Parkhurst was selected in the MLS SuperDraft by his hometown England Revolution team. In his first year playing for Revs, he was named MLS Rookie of the Year.  

    Over 2003, Parkhurst played for Bradenton Academics earning ten caps and scoring 2 goals. During 2005-2008, Parkhurst played for New England Revolution earning 115 caps and scored 1 goal.

    In 2007Parkhurst won the MLS Defender of the Year Award the MLS Fair Play Award in 2007 and 2008. In 2006 and 2008, Michael was named the MLS Humanitarian.

    After his contract with New England Revolution expired in 2008, Partkurst signed up with Danish Superliga side Nordsjælland as a free agent. Playing during the 2009-10 season, Michael was inserted in playing in various positions as a full-back, center midfielder and right back. In 2008-2012, Parkhurst, while played for FC Nordsjælland, earned 106 caps and scored three goals.

    In 2013-2014, Parkhurst played for F.C. Augsburg, earning two caps and scoring 0 goals. From 2014-2016, Parkhurst played for Columbus Crew SC earning 100 caps and scoring 0 goals.

    In 2016, Parhurst was traded to Atlantic United F.C. He captained the team and in 2018 he led his side to their first MLS Cup victory.
