Eulaulah Donyll Hathaway, aka Lalah, is an American singer from Chicago, Illinois. She first signed with Virgin Records in 1989 and later released her first single “Inside the Beat”. A year later, while she was studying at Berklee College of Music, she started working on her debut album.
Over the course of her music career, Lalah Hathaway has released six solo, full-length studio albums. Her first album, Lalah Hathaway was released in 1990, which debuted at 191 on the Billboard Hot 200. She also released an EP titled Night and Day which was only released in Japan. Four years later, she released her 2nd album A Moment which did debuted at number 34 on The Top R&B albums chart. Unfortunately, the album did not sell as well as her previous release and she eventually left Virgin Records for GRP Records in 1999.
Lalah Hathaway released the album The Song Lives On on April 1999 alongside Joe Sample. The album did particularly well with it being one of the highest charting albums for both of them. They also won an award from the Billboard/BET for Mainstream Jazz Album. Later in 2004 following a 5 year hiatus, she released her fourth album Outrun the Sky. The album did significantly better than her previous releases with the single “Forever, For Always, For Love” charting at number 112 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Lalah Hathaway later signed on with Stax Records in 2007 and released a tribute single from the Earth, Wind & Fire album titled Interpretations. Her 5th studio album Self Portrait was released the following year which later on became her most successful album yet. The album received positive reviews and charted really well upon its release.
Lalah Hathaway also released 3 albums following Self Portrait which was Where It All Begins in 2011, Lalah Hathaway Live in 2018, and Honestly in 2018.
