Henry Franklin Winkler was born on October 30, 1945 in Manhattan, New York City. His Jewish parents emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1939.
His first exposure on television was as an extra on a game show where he received $10 for his role. He appeared on various television commercials while doing theatre at Manhattan Theatre Club. In 1973, Winkler was cast in a season four episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He also appeared in The Bob Newhart Show and Rhoda. His role in Happy Days started as a minor character but became the focus as the show progressed. When Happy Days ended its run in 1984, Winkler spent most of his time producing and directing. He produced television shows including MacGyver, So Weird, Sightings, Scandal Sheet, Wintuition and Hollywood Squares. For films, he directed Memories of Me and Cop and a Half.
In 1990s, Winkler was cast in Absolute Strangers, Monty, One Christmas, Scream and Waterboy. He also produced So Weird for the Disney Channel.
