Rise of The Great Khali
The Great Khali was the first Indian Wrestler who signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for Deep South Wrestling in 2006. At that time, he wrestled under his actual name (Dalip Singh Rana). He made his debut as a villain on SmackDown in WWE television in which he attacked The Undertaker. Later he was introduced as The Great Khali. In his in-ring debut, he defeated Funaki. At Judgement day, Khali won a match against the Undertaker after getting some illegal assistance from Daivari. He kept on beating different dominant wrestlers and mocked victory pose of Undertaker hence was on the rampage for a few weeks.
At the American Bash, he challenged the Undertaker but could not compete with him due to issue in medical tests. However, when The Undertaker again challenged him, Khali faced his first WWE definite loss.
Khali, along with his manager, switched to ECW brand. He wrestled against John Cena and won the match as Cena got disqualified. Khali easily defeated The Highlanders and was looking for a better competitor. Then he appeared for the first time in WrestleMania and won his match.
In another episode, Khali slammed Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, and Edge in the backstage. He also attacked John Cena, who was the WWE champion at that time to tell that he wants that title. However, at One Night Stand, Cena won from Khali.
In 2007, Khali was drafted by the SmackDown as their first draft pick. He won his first World Heavyweight Championship in a twenty-man battle royal. He defeated Kane as well as Batista in a triple threat match at The Great American Bash. He also introduced his new finisher and named it as “Khali Vise-Grip.”
He retained his title even after getting disqualified for using a steel chair. He was informed that he would need to defend his title against Batista. Khali lost his title even after having a Punjabi prison rematch against Batista. He participated in different matches like the Elimination Chamber but failed to win.

The Great Khali was one of the officers for Punjab state police before starting wrestling. In 2000, he started his wrestling career from All Pro Wrestling and had a ring name, Giant Singh. During this time, Khali’s opponent Brian Ong died after receiving flapjack from him. Despite Brian’s old concussions during his sessions, his trainers permitted him to carry on the training. And it was verified that the death of Brian occurred due to inadequate supervision of APW staff. So the family of Brian filed a case against APW.
Khali then joined World Championship Wrestling for eight months. He got an offer from New Japan Pro-Wrestling by Team 2000 Leader, Masahiro Chono. He lost two tag team matches at Tokyo Nippon Budokon. Till 2006, Khali wrestled in All Japan Pro Wrestling and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. The Great Khali’s last appearance in WWE was in 2018 at the Greatest Royal Rumble Match. He got eliminated in less than a minute in this match.
