You heard that right. An airline is now in the shoe business, and their shoes aren’t cheap.
This week, Virgin America broke records for selling a one-of-a-kind pair of sneakers for nearly $100,000. The shoes, called “Virgin America First Class Shoes” were listed on eBay originally for $200, but quickly rose in price.
It ended up selling for $97,877.77 with 65 bids. There were plenty of cancelled (possibly fraudulent) bids. You’ll be happy to know, though, that with your $97,877.77, you get free standard shipping.
What are these shoes and why would anyone want them? Well, we can at least answer the first question.
The shoes are designed to show off Virgin America’s first class cabin, with the amenities available on it. For example, the shoes have a stainless steel seat buckle where the laces are, mood lighting, a LCD video monitor, a rechargeable battery, a USB phone charger, and a WiFi hotspot. The leather is the same used in Virgin America’s first class cabin.
The winning bids are going to charity.
Here’s what Virgin says about why you want these shoes:
This might be your last chance to get your hands on a piece of historic aviation memorabilia. Whether you’re a sneakerhead or an airline enthusiast, this is a can’t-miss collectible. And it’s sure to be a conversation starter for years to come.
What would you do with $100,000 sneakers? Would you ever need mood lighting or a wifi hotspot in your shoes?
