How much does coining a term for a social media phenomenon, a hit reality TV show and film with the same name get you? The Squander investigates the net worth of MTV’s Nev Schulman’s.
Schulman’s 2010 documentary, “Catfish,” which documented his experience of being fooled by a woman he met online has attributed to all of the success he has experienced to date. The documentary depicts than-photographer Schulman’s online relationship with a 19-year-old he knew as Megan, a beautiful singer who began a steamy virtual fling with Schulman, which even included talking for extended periods of time on the phone. Catfish is Schulman’s journey to meet Megan, and it proved to be a historical journey in uncovering the lonely and attention-starved “catfisher,” Angela Wessleman, who had been the personality behind Megan the entire time.
The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and its success there led to Schulman being the host and executive producer behind an equally successful reality show of the same name, which has just been renewed for its fourth season since its 2012 creation.
In 2014, he wrote his own book still capitalizing on the idea of love found through social media titled Real Life: Love, Lies, and Identity in the Digital Age to further add to his brand. He’s currently on a book tour for it right now.
He can thank his miserable catfish experience for it all. Stay tuned for the upcoming season four to watch more people have their dreams of being with their online love smashed.
