Toni Braxton, an American singer, actress, songwriter and musician, was born on October 7, 1967 in Severn, Maryland.
Before becoming famous, Toni Braxton was in an all-girl group with her sisters called the Braxtons. The group never took off but Toni was however discovered by Antonio “L.A.” Reid who recruited her to perform the demo for the soundtrack of Eddie Murphy’s movie Boomerang. She was later signed by LaFace Records and began working on her first solo album Toni Braxton which was released on July 13, 1993. The album was an instant hit which topped the charts in various countries on its first weeks of release. Due to the success of the album, she won 3 Grammies, and 2 American Music Awards.
Toni Braxton’s 2nd album Secrets came out in June 1996. Several songs from the album as well as the album itself once again topped the charts. She faced financial issues after the album went platinum due a failed lawsuit against LaFace regarding her payment. She filed for bankruptcy and was able to recover most of her estate. Later, she appeared on Disney Broadway shows in 1998.
Toni Braxton’s 3rd studio album The Heat was released on April 25, 2000 which received a similarly positive response from critics and fans. The album was nominated for several music awards and was able to win 1 Grammy, and 2 American Music Awards. The following year, she was able to land her first appearance in a major film in Kingdom Come.
Toni Braxton’s 4th album was released in 2002 which was titled More Than a Woman. Due to complications with her pregnancy, and the mishandling of her record label, the album did not do as well as the previous releases due to lack of promotions and poor management. In the following years, she released Libra in 2005, Pulse in 2010, Love, Marriage and Divorce in 2014, and Braxton Family Christmas in 2018. She also has an upcoming album titled Sex & Cigarettes.
