Quincy Matthew Hanley was born on October 26, 1986, on a military base in Wiesbaden, Germany. He is also known by his stage name is Schoolboy Q. His parents divorced before he was born, and he and his mom moved to Texas before finally staying in California. He was part of 52 Hoover Gangster Crips, a street gang. He was a drug dealer selling Oxycontin, crack and marijuana. He was arrested in 2007 and was in jail for six months.

Schoolboy Q worked with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2006. In 2008, he released his first mix tape, Schoolboy Turned Hustla.
