In school, she's always shown an affinity for athletics as she played in multiple volleyball championships for her high school. She went on to get her Bachelor of Science in public relations from North Carolina State University.

She was first signed on May 17, 2012 for WWE's NXT where she further developed her image and career. Charlotte had her first televised match against Bayley on July 17, 2013 which she won.

She competed in a tournament for the Women's Championship title on NXT against formidable opponents such as Alexa Bliss and Emma and eventually Natalya in the finals. On May 29, at NXT Takeover, Charlotte Flair won her first ever NXT Women's Championship title. She went on to convert her overall image from villain to hero during her rematch with Bayley on October 2nd in which they effectively ended their longstanding feud.

During the December 8 Slammy Awards special on Raw, Charlotte made her first ever WWE main roster appearance where she went up against Natalya.
